While many studies have looked at the public’s trust in the police, very few have examined police trust in the public. We develop a scale to measure police trust in the public and examine how police trust in the public affects police job behaviors.
We examine prosecutorial decisions that affect the certainty, celerity, and severity of punishment at the county level. We find that prosecutors’ effect on the certainty and celerity of punishment was associated with lower levels of crime, whereas their effect on the severity of punishment was not.
Little research exists on how restricting police arrests affects crime. We test whether restrictions on police authority to arrest affects deterrence and crime rates.
